Love Letters in Crayon: Forest Green
If you're looking to encounter this color, there's only one place to see it as of now: our beautiful homeworld.
Every Friday afternoon, “64 to Infinity: Love Letters in Crayon” will illustrate the long, strange story of humankind in one of the 64 colors that make up this world-famous primary palette. Last week, we admired the Cornflower crayon while taking due note of its variable perception. In this week’s Love Letter, we once again admire our beautiful homeworld in what might be its most verdant form: Forest Green.

Although the avaricious may see nothing but dollar signs when this color comes to mind--contributing to its infamous identification with jealousy and selfish desire--Forest Green is inseparable from the natural world and is a common color employed by environmental enthusiasts.
Inspired by the prevailing pigmentation of the foliage that bands the globe across the temperate regions of the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, Forest Green is one of the most frequently occurring shades on Earth.
Perhaps for this reason, the hue has a relaxing effect on our kind that contributes to the tradition of the “Green Room,” where performers and creatives can calm their minds in preparation for the tall task of sublimating education and experience into entertainment.
Forest Green is associated with righteousness, resurrection and regeneration across religions and mythologies. From the thief’s tunic worn by the fabled Robin Hood to the adventurous attire of the Child Scouts, the shade evokes both duty and daring.
The roots of Forest Green in the palette of The Planet gives it a character of vitality, growth, and progress.
Similarly, in the world of martial arts, a uniform belt in this shade symbolizes both a commitment to maturation and the boundless potential of a passionate spirit, recalling the towering trees that spring forth from tiny seeds after years or even decades of development.
The chlorophyll that gives Forests their Green is also believed at this time to be a unique feature of our world among the countless infinity due to Earth’s precise placement in the habitable zone of our home star.
This fortuitous framework allows our home planet’s flora to absorb just enough of The Sun’s energy to thrive, and now you see why I am obsessed with this color.
Forest Green is not only a source of inspiration, but a source of animation for the many forms of life with which we share out living world….makes a pretty good crayon color too. However, if you’re more into human handcraft you’re in luck next week…join us Friday afternoon as we celebrate the incomparable impression made by the Gold crayon!
